Garbage is

Introduction

Despite the free choice of choosing any products to create, the criteria for this project would be that our prototype would have to be made up of about 70 to 80% recycled materials

Concept 1

The first concept was a stand up pencil case, which only allow the users to carry a limited amount of stationery so as to decrease the weight and not over carry the amount of stationery actually needed.

Concept 2

The second concept was an organizer box/pencil box. What makes it different is that the users can pull out a tab and create small compartment or push it in to create more space.

Concept 3

The third concept was a stationery holder plus a table lamp. This functional combinations provides larger table space unlike a normal stationery holder and table lamp which occupy its own space.

Prototype

The unwanted cardboard used to make the  prototype is prone to bend due to the weight of the stationery. Thus, I used leftover acrylic from my previous project as a backing to make it tougher to bend compared to cardboard.

I decided to use magnets as a lock, so I cut out a metal sheet from a cookie container as well. I cut up cloth from an old dress to cover up the plastic.

My prototype can fit up to 7 to 9 stationery depending on the size.

When I am doing my prototype, I faced an issue of durability when using unwanted cardboard, I cut out the pieces only to realized that it might be too weak to support the weight of the stationery. I added more layers but it still bend. Hence, I end up looking for another material, which is thin but strong enough to withstand the weight. As a result, I ended up using a 1mm plastic.

Learning Point

Garbage is not garbage. This project has taught me that there are many things that people can reduce, reuse and recycle. However many people are too lazy or they simply don't care about it, many just throw away and buy new ones as they think that it would take up so much time and effort to upcycle the products. If we just put in a bit of time and effort, we could make many decent products from old, unwanted things that we usually throw away. This not only help us save money but also resources as well, which benefits our natural environment.

I saw so many different creative ideas from my class mates. E.g Like a new way to design slippers and it is made from old unwanted and recycled materials, such as thick pieces of cardboard. This reminded me that design can always evolve and it does not stop at the current design.
